Beware of These Germs in a Swimming Pool

Legionella: A bacterium called legionella was the next most common cause of outbreaks and the source of all 13 recorded deaths between 2015 and 2019. It can cause a severe type of pneumonia, called Legionnaires’ disease, or a less serious illness called Pontiac fever, which can cause flu-like symptoms. People 50 and older, current or former smokers and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a lung infection from the bacteria, according to the CDC.

“When I think legionella, I think hot tubs,” Hlavsa said. “And when the hot tubs are jetting that air out, if there’s

‘Waterlog,’ Roger Deakin, and the Case for Wild Swimming

Some months ago, as the weather was first turning warm, I was out walking along the Mill River in New Haven when I saw a young man emerge from the water. He appeared to have gone for a swim wearing nothing more than boxer briefs. The sight was shocking; the river had barely thawed, and I’d always thought the unspoken rule about urban rivers was that you didn’t get into them (especially not half naked). This particular stretch at the base of East Rock Park looked idyllic enough, with willows and elms growing along its banks, but around the bend,

Why Olympic Swimmers Wear 2 Caps During a Race

It wasn’t until I got into competitive swimming in junior high that I understood the importance of a swimmer’s cap. Like a lot of people, I’m sure, I thought it was just an accessory or a rule community pools asked you to follow. Little did I know, caps play just as crucial a role in your performance as goggles do. Let me explain — for someone with longer hair like myself, a cap’s purpose is quite obvious, which is to keep the hair out of your face. However, for swimmers with buzzed or shorter hair, it might seem a little

Arno Kamminga is the only other man to have ever gone inside 58 but the Olympic champion’s time – the 10th-fastest in history – was not even his season’s best which came at the British Olympic trials last month in 57.39.

Neither is it a championship record given he went 57.10 at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow.
